Daily Prompt – January 27, 2026

What books do you want to read?

I have around four hundred purchased e-books sitting on my Kobo waiting to be read, in addition to more than ten physical books (I just cannot resist bargain hunting in discounts & deals), so this question is partially answered.

I usually have four or five books on the go at the same time. There’ll be a single long-form novel open (currently, Outlaw Planet, by M.R. Carey – one of my absolute favourite storytellers; he also writes as Mike Carey).

I’ll also keep one or two collections of short stories open to dip into now and then. Tales from The Stranger Times, by C.K. McDonnell; and Isaac Asimov’s Nightfall and Other Stories are occupying that seat at the moment.

Then I’ll have at least one non-fiction read going as a palate-cleanser. I’ve been reading Ed Conway’s brilliantly researched and written Material World and Neil de Grasse Tyson’s To Infinity and Beyond in that vein for a little while now.

There are about twenty or more books from the backlog that I really agonise over choosing between as the next ones up – and with upcoming releases from Tana French, Martha Wells, M.R. Carey, Emily St. John Mandel, Rose Tremain and Adrian Tchaikovsky jostling to queue-jump – the backlog is almost sure to grow.

  1. I have three books at the moment: Chip War by Chris Miller, Brainstorm by Daniel Siegel and Australian Garden Rescue by Mary Horsfall (not sure if I can call it a proper book but I learnt many practical tips from it :-). Two more books waiting in queue (Who Knew by Barry Diller, and Good Energy by Casey Means) and ten reserved from local library.
