How do you write what people actually want to read?
The truth is, I’m not sure that I actually do.
Much as when I have a guitar in my hands, I try to create something that I would actually enjoy hearing – or reading. And the caveat with that is that it needs to have something different; something unexpected. Imperfection is tolerable, as long as there is are sparks of originality to ignite real interest, and touches of authentic humanity to entice the soul.
That’s how it starts out anyway. But once you get going the characters in your book can become as real as people around you – perhaps even more real, since you know what they’re actually thinking. And then they start to reinterpret their parts.
Book three in the Sleepwalking to Hades series is well under way. I think I know everything that’s going to happen in it. But each day as I write I discover something new; occasionally something that fundamentally changes the story.
I wouldn’t have it any other way.
